Rhetoric is not dialectic

Rhetoric asks how an idea persuades. Dialectic asks whether the idea survives honest examination. Strong reasoning needs both, but it must never confuse persuasive force with truth.

Begin every argument by locating its conclusion, the reasons offered for it, and the assumptions connecting those reasons to the conclusion.
